Description
LINCOLN SK9771SE WATERSIDE SOUTH 1941-1/12/395 Central Market 08/10/53 II Market hall. 1938, incorporating the front of the former Butter Market of 1737. By Robert Atkinson. Ashlar and brick, with steel frame and Roman tile roof with clerestory. Classical style, matching the Butter Market front. Moulded plinth, rusticated ground floor, quoins, coped parapet with baluster panels, and urn finials at the corners. Single storey and 2 storeys, 12 bays. Projecting north front, 2 bays, has pediment. 2 round headed doorways with wrought-iron overthrows. Between them, a datestone, inscribed "John Lobsey, Mayor, 1737". Above, a Venetian window with pseudo-balustrade and dentilled cornice. In the pediment, the City arms enriched with sprays. Beyond, on either side, a blocked doorway with barred overlight, and 4 blank round headed arches. Beyond again, corner pavilions with clasping pilasters and blocked doorways with barred overlights.
