Description
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was conducted during groundworks for the foundations of two new extensions to an existing dwelling on land at Cock Hill House, No. 7 West End, Burgh le Marsh, in May 2008. The monitoring revealed a single cremation burial broadly dating to the second century AD along with a possible north-south orientated inhumation burial to the north. The cremation was of a single individual composed of large bone fragments from all parts of the body contained within a greyware cremation pot broadly dated to the 2nd century AD. A north-south orientated cut was observed in the north of the trench, which may represent an inhumation burial. The entire area was covered by a Roman burial ploughsoil horizon containing a total of eleven sherds of pottery of 3rd-4th century date. No further archaeological features were identified. {1}{2}
