Description

A detailed programme of archaeological recording was conducted after a fragment from a wrecked vessel was found washed up on the foreshore at Trusthorpe after heavy storms in Spring 2018. The fragment was thought to be a small section from a carvel constructed timber ship, and was comprised of five close-set frames or ribs, and four hull planks closed by caulking. A number of shallow, straight and curving incised lines were noted on one of the hull planks. Initially thought to be shipwrights marks, closer examination determined the marks were more likely to be merchant's marks, suggesting some of the timbers may have been re-used from an earlier structure. {1}{2}
