Full Description

The Manor House was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in October 2014 to inform proposed residential development on land off Mill Lane, Legbourne. The building is a two-storey cottage of late 18th or early 19th century date. It is built of rendered and whitewashed brick, laid in English Garden Wall bond, and features a double pitched roof with brick chimney stacks to both gables. The main range is aligned on an east to west axis, with the main entrance on the southern elevation. A two-storey extension is attached to the northern elevation of the main range, and a single storey, mono-pitched garage is attached to the east of the extension. A small outside toilet block is a short distance to the east of the main range, attached to it by a short boundary wall. Access to the interior of the property was not possible at the time of the survey, although it was apparent that the building had been subject to some relatively recent alterations, including the addition of a concrete tile roof and the replacement of the doors and windows with uPVC. The name of the property could suggest that the current structure was built on the site of a former medieval manor (see PRN 41845). No evidence of any earlier use of the site could be determined, however, and it may just be that the name was used to give the site some sense of status and grandeur. {1}{2} Manor House, Legbourne. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of U plan. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Located within a loose farmstead cluster. {3}
