Full Description
The 'Old School House' marked on the modern map is constructed of stone and brick, it would have almost certainly previously been a single-storey thatched dwelling. This is backed up by records found in the Lincolnshire archives, which state that the school was built in 1837 and enlarged in 1873. It became Grayingham CE School until at least 1913 and finally, Grayingham Council School. The School was closed on 31st October 1923. {1}{2}
The school is present on both the 1887 and 1906 Ordnance Survey map of the village. {3}{4}
White's 1856 Directory of Lincolnshire states that the school was built in 1838 (which conflicts slightly with the date proffered by the archival records) by the Lord of the manor who allowed the master £30 a year for the education of poor children. {5}
