Full Description
Rex Russell notes that a £56 grant was given towards a school in Willoughton in 1846 but as this school dates, according to the Lincolnshire Archives, to 1866, it is not certain that this grant funded the construction of the school. {1}{2}
White's 1856 Directory of Lincolnshire states that there is a National School, built in 1845, attended to by an Elizabeth Fox, who is listed as 'schoolmistress'. It is possible that this school was rebuilt in 1866 or transferred to purpose-built premises. {3}
The main body of what is previously denoted to be a 'school' on the 1887 Ordnance Survey map of the village has been substantially modified. There appear to be late 20th Century extensions to the front and rear, though the Victorian 'body' of the building remains in place. On the right, the previous adjoining structure, present on both the 1887 and 1906 OS Map of the village, has been demolished and replaced by a prefabricated private residence. Given the appearance and character of the new residence, it is highly likely that this occurred in the late 1960s. {4}{5}{6}{7}{8}
Documentation from the Lincolnshire archives suggest that the school moved to new premises in 1929, and preliminary visual assessment of the new building confirms that the structure appears to be congruent with a purpose-built interwar school. It remains open as Willoughton Primary School. {9}{10}
