Full Description
Evidence of extensive former limestone quarrying activity was recorded in this location in September 2010, during archaeological monitoring of new development at 2 Northgate. Limestone extraction is known to have been conducted in this part of Lincoln during the medieval and post-medieval periods, and it is possible that the activity here is of medieval origin; it certainly pre-dates the construction of 2 Northgate in 1894, by which time the quarry pits had been backfilled. {1}{2}
