Full Description
A Supermarine Spitfire IA fighter aircraft crashed on land to the east of South Owersby, on the 4th of July 1940. The aircraft was designated N3294 from 222 Squadron, based at RAF Kirton in Lindsey. It was taking part in an interceptional patrol, and was returning to base whilst descending through dense cloud from 15000ft. Conditions within the cloud were described as extremely bumpy, and the aircraft was seen to appear at 5000ft from the base of the clouds in a vertical dive. The pilot did not have sufficient height to regain full control, and was killed as the aircraft crashed in open farm land. The crash site was confirmed in early 2017, after a metal detecting survey revealed a concentration of magnetic anomalies in this location. {1}
A subsequent excavation of the crash site was conducted in November 2017. Small pieces of the aircraft wreckage were identified and recovered, including pieces of the fabric structure, fragments of the engine, a propeller blade and a cigarette case, amongst other fragments. {2}
