Full Description
Three redeposited sherds of early post-medieval pottery were recovered from this location in November 2019, during archaeological monitoring of new residential development at Sycamores, Back Bank. All three sherds were from the same vessel, which was a tubular-handled skillet of Glazed Red Earthenware, thought to date from the mid 16th to 17th centuries. Several wear marks were noted on the internal surfaces of the vessel, indicating the use of a stirring implement such as a metal spoon. The basal sherd showed the vessel had tripod feet, although one of the feet had broken off at some point. Scarring and wear marks around the broken foot suggested the skillet was still in use for some time after this damage occurred. {1}{2}
