Full Description
During a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at Kingerby Hall for groundworks around the kitchen, a series of post-medieval features were identified. In the southern excavated footings was an east-west aligned brick structure comprising four courses of brickwork. The bricks were handmade and of 16th-18th century date. The top of the structure appeared to be capped with a single course of bricks, indicating a possible culvert. This was sealed by re-worked dark brown soil, approximately 0.5m thick, containing charcoal and 32 bricks and brick fragments of 15th-17th century, as well as ten sherds of pottery dating to the late 18th-19th century, and a single cattle bone fragment. {1}{2}
