Full Description

19th century coastguard station which can be seen in the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey [1]. The coastguard station probably included the brick building which comprises 11, 13 and 15 Admiralty Road, as well as 23 Admiralty Road (known as Tower House) and associated cottages [2]. It may have ceased to operate by 1962, whe Tower House in the adjoining cottages were put up for sale by auction [3]. Traditional coastguard stations began to be phased out when communications technology improved and coastal watch was replaced by remote monitoring of ships from Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres.
