Full Description
An 18th century brick icehouse is mound behind temple. Shallow brick dome. Entrance feature (if there was one) has gone. Entrance on north side, indications of entrance passage now gone. In 1771 the canal pond altered in preparation for icehouse which was built the following year. Built of brick, deep pit beneath the floor and a domed roof crowned with lead. The vault appears to be cracked inside and well partly choked with rubble. Set high on artificial mound.{1}
The Ice house 200 metres east of Belton House is a Grade II listed building which is now disused. It was built in 1772 and is an earth mound approximately five metres high, with the remains of a brick lined tunnel entrance to the north. A wooden door was added in c.1991. {2}
