Full Description
Site of battle in Civil War. Battle seems to be apocryphal. I have made researches and can find nothing about it. Dr Morris, in charge of seventeenth century maps, reports that it is quite fictious. {1}
Near the village is a circular encampment 500 feet in diameter and having several tumuli called the Round Hills. In 1855 several skeletons were discovered in field called Redhill, west of the village where according to tradition a battle was fought.{2}
The Ordnance Survey map of 1905 marks the site of this battle as having been fought between Royalists and Parliamentarians in 1655. This is a peculiar date to give since the English Civil war was over by 1649. {3}{4}
