Full Description

Roman pottery has been found here at SK 997 308. This information is from H. Healey and B. Simmons of the South Lincolnshire Archaeology Unit. {1}{2} This site is a depression measuring about 100 metres by 30 metres and is approximately 3 or 4 metres in depth at its deepest (central) point. It has obviously been subjected to large modification by agricultural machinery over the past hundred years. This site is not an old dried-up spring as the depression has no outlet whatsoever, it is at the high point on a hill and the soil is so rocky (ironstone) that it would not have yielded up water. Around its eastern rim there was a scatter of Romano-British pottery - some greyware, a couple of sherds of Caistorware and other wares. No pottery turned up in the depression itself. The centre of the depression appears to show signs of yellow clay at its deepest point. It may be the site of an ironstone quarry.{3}
