PRN 35054
DURING AN EVALUATION OF LAND BETWEEN SPALDING ROAD AND EASTGATE WELL PRESERVED EVIDENCE FOR MEDIEVAL POTTERY MAKING WAS IDENTIFIED. A LARGE PIT WAS FOUND CONTAINING A MASS OF BROKEN FOURTEENTH CENTURY POTTERY. THE POTTERY WAS WASTE FROM PRODUCTION AND THEREFORE IMPLIES THE PROXIMITY OF MEDIEVAL POTTERY KILNS ALTHOUGH NO EVIDENCE FOR ANY KILN WAS DISCOVERED. {1}{2}
ON LAND TO THE EAST OF HERE AN EVALUATION IDENTIFIED FURTHER WASTERS AND THIRTEENTH TO EIGHTEENTH CENTURY POTTERY,ALSO A SMALL PIT WITH FIFTEENTH CENTURY BOURNE WARE POTTERY WITHIN IT AT TF 1050 1992. {3}{4}
A watching brief was carried out on the former Spalding Road industrial estate. In the south of the area dumps of pottery wasters were identified. Two dumps were revealed which dated to the early 13th to early 14th century, and from the mid 15th to the mid 17th century. A further series of waster dumps was also identified which appears to date from the late 12th to the mid 13th century. {5}{6}
