In the churchyard of 'St Mary's' Church, West Torrington, is the medieval base and shaft of a cross. The original shaft dates from 1700. {1}{2} The cross was restored and given a new top in the 19th century. {3} There is a full description in the revised scheduling document 22679. {4} The base of the cross is 31 square inches in size. {5} The area of the cross is one square metre, the length is one metre and the height is 3.6 metres. Three steps, the lower two date from the 19th century and the upper step and shaft with chamfered corners dates from the 14th century. The upper part is inscribed '1700' and the central step is inscribed with a dedication to Reverend T. W. Mossman and his wife Anne. The monument has moulded necking and a cap with a 19th century gabled cross with a crucifixion to the west, and the Virgin and Child to the east.
