Full Description

Polished stone axe found in 1957 at approximately the grid reference given. {1}{2}{3} A stone axe from Grainsby made from tremolite fels. {4} This is a stone axehead made from nephrite. {5} It is now known that the stone used to make jadeite and nephrite axeheads in the early Neolithic period was quarried from high-altitude quarries in the Swiss and Italian Alps and northern Apennines. The axeheads were then exported from the Alpine region across the continent of Europe eventually reaching Britain and Ireland. {6}
