Full Description

CROPMARKS OF AN ELONGATED OBLONG DITCHED ENCLOSURE WITH A RATHER BULBOUS SOUTHERN END, SEEN ON PAUL EVERSON APs OF 1979. POSSIBLE LONG BARROW. {1}~ ALSO INTERPRETED AS A PROBABLE UNKNOWN PREHISTORIC CROPMARK ENCLOSURE. {2} LOCATED AT THE EDGE OF THE INTERFLUVE SPUR, BELOW CREST AND OVERLOOKING NORMANBY DALES TO THE EAST. IT IS AN ELONGATED ENCLOSURE ORIENTATED NW TO SE. ITS EXTENT TO THE NORTH IS UNCERTAIN BUT TO THE SOUTH END DITCHES BELL OUTWARDS SLIGHTLY AND POSSIBLY HAVE A GAP ON THE EAST. POSSIBLY A LONG BARROW WITH A FACADE AT THE SOUTH END. {3} THE MONUMENT INCLUDES THE BURIED REMAINS OF A NEOLITHIC LONG BARROW. IT IS CLEARLY VISIBLE FROM THE AIR AS AN ELONGATED OBLONG CROPMARK ALIGNED SE-NW AND DEFINED BY A PERIMETER DITCH 60M BY 30M. THE LONG SIDES OF THE DITCH - WHICH MAY HAVE SUPPORTED A PALISADE AND FACADE OR AN ARRANGEMENT OF POSTS - DELINEATED AN AREA SET ASIDE FOR MORTUARY ACTIVITIES INCLUDING THE EXPOSURE OF HUMAN REMAINS. THERE ARE OTHER PREHISTORIC FUNERARY MONUMENTS IN THIS AREA, THOUGHT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE PREHISTORIC TRACKWAY NOW FORMALISED AS HIGH STREET. {4} THIS LONG BARROW IS LOCATED ON THE TIP OF A RIDGE, BELOW THE CREST, OVERLOOKING THE NORMANBY DALES. IT IS ALIGNED SE-NW, AND ITS LONG AXIS TRAVERSES THE CONTOURS. IT IS A TRAPEZIFORM ENCLOSURE, WITH AN IRREGULARLY SHAPED SOUTH END, WITH A POSSIBLE ENTRANCE GAP ON THE EAST SIDE. {5}, LENGTH 70M, WIDTH 40M, HTM 160M
