Full Description

The medieval settlement of Swinethorpe is first documented in 1181, and at that time was known as Suenestorp. The name means 'Sveinns secondary settlement of Eagle'. {1} MEDIEVAL RIDGE AND FURROW WAS NOTED IN THESE FIELDS DURING ARCHAEOLOGICAL MONITORING OF A WATER PIPELINE, AND FROM APS. MEDIEVAL POTTERY WAS RECOVERED. {2}{3}{4} It is recorded that in the 1330's Walter Ferriby of Brant Broughton, known as 'Black Wat' plundered nearby Morton and Swinethorpe, burning property and livestock. {4} Possible settlement remains have been noted on the east side of the road at the main right angle bend at Swinethorpe. {6}
