Full Description
60824
A post mill shows on 19th century maps 'in millfield' to the east of Pitts Corner cross roads on the north side of Washingborough Road, to the east of the footpath which cuts through the wood at Pitt Corner. The site is now covered by bungalows at the far end of Gail Grove. In Christopher Stoyles - the miller’s accounts 1616 - is an inventory stating 'the lease of the windemilne and the ground whereon she standeth as it is specified in the said lease - thirty pounds'. There are no other known records referring to this mill. The private vehicle right of way at the end of Gail Grove may be an old route to the mill. {1}
A watching brief was carried out on this site during groundworks for the construction of a bungalow and garage. The removal of topsoil revealed the remains and extensive demolition debris of a twentieth century building at the western end of the development area. These remains would have destroyed any evidence of earlier activity in the area. {2}
