61527 A linear earthwork feature has been noted on aerial photographs. It has been interpreted as a medieval tree avenue. {1} This seems to be a rather doubtful interpretation for several reasons. Its position near to the Witham means that it was on land susceptible to flooding, and this together with its location very close to, if not within the medieval settlement, makes it rather an unlikely place for a medieval tree avenue. The alignment of the feature, roughly parallel to the Witham, suggests that it may be a bank for flood defence, and it may also be a road or trackway which may have been a continuation of High Street, whose alignment it also appears to follow. {2}
