Full Description

44011 Washdyke Lane has a washdyke or sheepwash running along its northern side. It approximately a quarter of a mile in length, and appears to be a large drainage ditch which has been widened out especially to make the sheepwash. It runs from Church Lane to Croft Lane. At the Church Lane end the dyke is bordered by a few trees and mature hawthorns. The dyke is then blocked by an earth bridge which is wide enough to take a tractor. After the bridge, and for the next 80-90 yards, the dyke widens into the Washdyke proper. Its approximate width is fifteen feet. There is always water in the washdyke, and the depth varies according to the weather conditions. For the remaining 120 yards between the washdyke and Croft Lane the dyke narrows and this stretch is crossed by a footbridge into the field. {1}
