Full Description
PRN 35512
A substantial amount of pottery has been recovered from this site dating to the 13th-14th century, the pottery mainly of Bourne A ware although Bourne D ware was also recovered. The pottery appears to be warped and cracked indicating that it is waste from a kiln site that is either here or in very close vicinity. A large number of various pits, ditches and gullies have been identified, one of which was a linear feature that was initially identified on the geophysical survey. {1}
There is a high probability that this feature is a field boundary. Pottery found of the Stamford type and animal bones indicate some limited occupation here although the site is probably marginal to domestic activity. {2}{3}
During further trial trenching centred on TF10370 20080 numerous pits and ditches/gullies of a medieval date were identified, several of which contained 13th-15th century Bourne ware pottery sherds. Although interpretations of these features are tentative but it is likely that the ditches/gullies are associated with land division and drainage. The pits may be representative of small quarry pits perhaps linked with the nearby pottery industry. Ninety three sherds in total were recovered from the site, ninety of which have been identified as Bourne ware. Only four wasters were positively identified, although it is likely that a high proportion of the other sherds are also kiln wastage. All the features were sealed by a buried soil. {4}{5}
A single large pit of medieval date was encountered during a watching brief. It contained a substantial amount of pottery within its fill and is probably associated with the medieval pottery industry in this area. Some local post medieval pottery was also recovered. {6}{7}
