Full Description
The Church of St Peter is built of coursed rubble and ashlar. The west tower is thought to be of 3 stages, being Early English with Decorated bell-openings, and has lavish battlements, gargoyles and eight pinnacles. Also Early English is the two-bay north arcade, with a pier capital of Purbeck marble. The north chapel is late 13th century and is built of bands of oolite and blue lias. There are five effigy tombs to the Disney family in the north chapel, hence its alternative name of the Disney Chantry. The arch into the south chapel or transept is late 14th century in date, as is the additional eastern arch of the north arcade and the two arches from the north arcade to the north chapel. The north aisle looks Perpendicular but is apparently Decorated. The doorway to the rood-stair can be found on the south side of the chancel arch. Restorations took place in 1858, 1885-6 (chancel and north chapel), 1902 (reroofing of nave), and 1909 (north chapel). The font is octagonal and Perpendicular in date.
