Full Description

The church was built in 1863 by James Fowler. {1} The church is built of stone and has a polygonal turret and tall pyramidal roof to the north west. It forms an impressive focal point at the end of St Michaels Road, and its verdant setting adds to the appearance of the area around it. It is considered to be of townscape interest by the Louth Conservation Area Appraisal. {2} The Church of St Michael and All Angels was designed by James Fowler, a prominent architect and public figure in Louth. The land on which the Church of St Michael and All Angels was built was paid for by William White, Vicar of Healing from 1837 to 1859. The cornerstone of the church was laid on 22 July 1862 by his wife, as White was absent due to illness and did not live to see the church completed. The church is of squared limestone rubble laid to courses with ashlared stone dressings and a slate-clad roof. It consists of a nave, north and south aisles, a west turret and porch, and an east chancel flanked by a Lady Chapel and priest’s vestry on the south, and an organ chamber and choir vestry on the north. To the west of the church is a high red brick wall with stone capping and intermittent piers with pyramid stone caps. Decorative wrought iron gates between square gate piers are at the north end, and both wall and gates were erected in 1864. The church was consecrated on 5 May 1863 by the Lord Bishop of Lincoln, the Right Rev. John Jackson. The first district curate was Father George Nash, a pioneer of the Anglo-Catholic movement who laid the foundations of Catholic worship at St Michael’s which has been continued by successive vicars.
