Full Description

The Cornmarket was built in 1853 and designed by the architect Pearson Bellamy. It stands three storeys high in heavily weathered ashlar with brick sides and a Welsh slate roof. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The Cornmarket was built on the site of the old Guildhall at the cost of about £6000, raised by £10 shares. It has twenty-four stalls and a glass roof but the front part of the building is in three storeys and is divided into offices. {2} The Cornmarket opened on 4 January 1854 and the foundation stone was laid 1 July 1853. This source has an extensive quotation from the Illustrated London News of 1854 describing the building. {3} The building is thought to have been demolished in 1974, and was subsequently de-listed. {4}{5}
