Full Description
PRN 23940
The main building stands two storeys high, constructed in machine made brick and a slate roof. Evidence of footings for now demolished glasshouses were evident on the site and their scars were clearly seen against the brickwork of the main building. Between these glasshouses a sunken boiler house was recorded. A limestone date stone situated high in the gable could clearly be seen, reading, JGB 1931. The initials relate to John George Baxter, who was recorded as a market gardener of Pinchbeck Road in the trade directories of 1930 and 1933. The building was probably open plan although later a dividing wall was constructed. Large windows lit up the upper storey, which was supported by two steel joists set in a T pattern. This building was probably part of a much larger complex although much of this, glasshouses, nursery buildings and storehouses has since been demolished. However two large chimneys centrally positioned on the southern elevation of the building still survived, probably serving a boiler for a heating system. {1}{2}
