PRN 70410 The building is depicted as a Primtive Methodist Church 1905 Ordnance Survey map. {1} Built in 1905 as ‘Portland Place Memorial Chapel’. The building was renamed the Central Methodist Church soon after the formation of the United Methodist Church in 1932. {2} The Central Methodist Church, with adjoining Sunday school, theatre and meeting rooms, was built in 1905 by Howdill & Sons of Leeds. The building underwent internal alterations 1968. Constructed from red brick with ashlar dressings, and slate roofs topped with pyramid-roofed ventilators. Overall, it is designed in a Baroque Revival style. Brick and much stone. Baroque, with a great deal of rustication. In the middle of the facade, a tripartite arrangement of windows divided by Ionic columns, the voussoirs breaking through the pediment with a lunette window above. Ritually southwest tower and a companion-piece a pretty little turret, typically Arts and Crafts {4}. The church is built of brick with rusticated stone dressings, has flamboyant Classical detail and asymmetrical domed tower. {5}
