Full Description

PRN 64132 Leasingham is mentioned in the Domesday Book. At that time it belonged to two landowners, the Bishop of Lincoln and Geoffrey Alselin, and it had a minimum population of 16 villeins, 1 sokeman, 4 bordars and Adam, the Bishop's man. {1} The name Leasingham means 'the homestead, estate of Leofsigingas (the family and/or followers of Leofsige)', and is Old English in origin. {2} The Lay Subsidy of 1334 records the parish's wealth as £5 11s 4 1/2p, slightly above average for its wapentake (Flaxwell). {3} The Diocesan Return of 1563 records 22 households resident in Leasingham. {4} By the early 18th century, Leasingham's population stood at c. 40 families. {5} By 1801, the population of the parish was 263, which rose to 397 in 1841 before falling again to 314 by 1901. {6} The various families and individuals who held land in Leasingham parish are discussed in Trollope and Yerburgh, as are various sites, for instance two manors, which are now unlocated. {9}{10} A short description of the parish and its inhabitants, including a list of landowners, farmers and tradesmen, is given in White' Directory. {11} Heavily gritted late Saxon or medieval pottery was found c. 1960 at TF 0552 4876 (PRN 64132a). {7}{8}
