Full Description
PRN 70518
Roman features consisting of a ditch dated to the 2nd-3rd century AD and a gully and pits dated to the 2nd-4th century AD were found during trial trenching. Given the proximity of the site to Ermine Street it seems likely that these features are associated with the back of strip buildings fronting onto Ermine Street, which would have been occupied for the duration of the Roman period. The pottery from these features is mostly finewares, suggesting that the buildings in the area were of high status. {1}{2}
Roman pits were discovered during a watching brief on this site. The pits are probably related to activity along Ermine Street and were probably situated to the rear of properties there. Ditches were also seen which may mark property boundaries. {3}{4}
