Full Description

PRN 36823 Following the Militia Act of 1852, counties were required to construct secure barracks for storing arms and training for the local militia, including accommodation for NCOs. This is an interesting example of domestic planning to provide secure accommodation, and part of an unusually complete group with the former 'keep'. The building comprises the general 'keep' and the attached officers quarters. The 'keep' was built in about 1858-72 and was possibly designed by Goddard in a castellated Gothic style. There is a courtyard at rear, surrounded by utilitarian buildings. The militia officers' quarters, now houses, were built in 1858, designed by Henry Goddard, architect, the county surveyor, for the Royal South Lincs Militia Regiment. Goddard built similar barracks in Lincoln for the North Lincolnshire Regiment.
