PRN 70588
The remains of a stone-built range of buildings of probable 16th century construction were encountered during a watching brief. The buildings are of uncertain function although at least one may have been a workshop with a cobbled/metalled yard to the south which was bounded by another wall, which may also have belonged to a building. The possible workshop building contained a hearth made of re-used medieval tiles and also a re-used medieval column base which may have been used as a support for an internal timber post. A series of thin clay floors and ashy occupation deposits were also seen along with a post hole of indeterminate function. The buildings appear to have gone out of use during the 17th century and their walls were robbed. Pits containing building material (stone and tile) were also found. A small amount of pottery was recovered, however this was suggestive of moderately high status occupation. {1}{2}
