Full Description
Three trial trenches were excavated in June 2008 at 10 James Street, Lincoln, prior to redevelopment of the site. Post-medieval walls possibly associated with a former stable block, demolished in the 1960s and a cobbled surface of the same date, possibly relating to a pigsty, were revealed. The stables and pigsty are shown on a lease plan dating from 1840. Clay pipe dating from the late 17th century and 30 pottery sherds dating from the late 17th to 20th century were also recovered. {1}{2}
Walls and part of the stable block associated with Burghersh Chantry House were identified during a watching brief at 10 James Street between September 2009 and February 2011. The stable is recorded on the 19th century Ordnance Survey map and was demolished prior to the construction of the mid 20th century bungalow on the site. A robber trench was also identified. This contained late 17th century to early 18th century clay tobacco pipe and was probably excavated to remove part of the medieval stone wall also identified on the site [see PRN 70622]. A possible pit or end section of another robber trench was also revealed which contained 17th to 18th century ceramic building material and residual mid 14th to 15th century pottery. Sealing all of these layers was the former topsoil which contained 18th to 19th century pottery and moulded glass fragments. Within the area for the new fishpond, a surface, possibly a path associated with Burghersh Chantry House was revealed. It was associated with 16th to 17th century pottery and 17th to 18th century clay pipe. {3}{4}
