Full Description

PRN 70627 Dickinson's Mill, formerly known as Brayford Mill, was located on the eastern waterside of the Brayford Pool at the corner of Brayford Wharf East and Brayford Street. The building was probably between the Holmes Grain Warehouse [see PRN 70348] and Foster's old works. The mill was constructed between 1854 and 1863, which is consistent with the rebuilding along Brayford Wharf East. During most of its existence, and certainly since 1885, the building was five storeys high. It was built of red brick and plans from 1854, 1863 and 1885 show it was an L-shaped building. Examination of the building, during its demolition in 1971, revealed there were at least two periods of construction. The earliest part was located in the north-east and predated the engine house. The earliest reference to the mill was a document showing its leasehold. The mill was due for sale on the 12th Decmber 1863 and this document recorded that the building was a 'steam flour mill, with engine house, flour shop, workshop, sotre rooms…engines, machines, gearing and apparatus'. It was sold again on the 1st September 1869 to Charles Sampson Dickinson who had also been associated with Albion Mill [PRN 70626]. {1}
