Full Description
A watching brief during alterations to the shop at 35-36 High Street, revealed a series of deposits to the rear of the existing shop, containing pottery ranging in date between 11th/mid 12th century and 13th to 15th century, as well residues associated with iron-working (see PRN38902). These deposits were succeeded by structural remains including two north-south aligned limestone wall foundations, and a probable cistern. The cistern was rectangular in plan with limestone walls and a limestone-built drain entering from the south. Dating material associated with the structural features, which may have related to a single building, was confined to three fragments of 15th/16th century pottery recovered from backfill contained in one of the foundation trenches. {1}{2}
