PRN 25628 The former telephone exchange on Gore Street, Spalding was the subject of a building survey carried out in December 2008. The exchange was constructed in 1938 (as stated on a panel located on the main elevation fronting onto Gore Street) to replace an earlier facility located within the Post Office on Sheep Market. The Gore Lane exchange went out of use in the 1980s as operations were transferred to a newer building on Winsover Road. The three storey building is rectangular in plan with a flat roof and has single storey extensions on two sides. It is constructed in brick, coursed in Flemish bond. The front, north-west facing, side of the building extends along Gore Lane, where the main entrance is situated. The building comprises two distinct components: a north-eastern block, slightly narrower than the remainder of the building and containing a variety of rooms on three floors, and a south-western block, containing, on the ground floor, the main hall, which would have housed the main distribution frame, and above this the large open-plan switchboard operating room. The north-eastern part of the building contained a battery room, tank room and boiler room on the ground floor, the meter room, a kitchen, offices and gentlemens' toilets on the first floor, and ladies' offices and toilets on the second floor. The main hall and operating room both contained remnants of parquet flooring, but all of the telephone machinery had been removed from the building. {1}{2}
