Abstract/Summary
Report on the excavation of six trial trenches, dug to inform proposed residential development on land off Louth Road, Wragby. The trenches were targeted to investigate a number of geophysical anomalies recorded by a prior magnetometry survey (see ELI12516), and confirmed the presence of several ditches, some of which were intercutting. A relatively large assemblage of 1st century AD pottery was recovered from the ditches, along with a piece from a fired clay loomweight, a possible iron punch or awl, and a quantity of animal bone. The finds and environmental evidence strongly suggest that the site was on the periphery of a late Iron Age rural farmstead in which a mixed agriculture was practised. Some possible overlap into the Romano-British period may also have occurred.
