Full Description

Field opposite Surfleet church ploughed for the first time in 1963. Perhaps an 18th century brick-making site. Below this were Stamford ware sherds - CP, spouted pitcher, and a few shell filled wares. Thumbed rim of a Thetford ware storage jar. There is a mica schist whetstone from this site.{1}{2} In March 1965, a large quantity of Stamford ware, the rim of a Thetford ware type storage jar and a small amount of shelly ware were found. Other medieval wares including Bourne D, also mica schist hone. Field known as Town Field - formerly an uneven grass field, first ploughed in early 1960s after much rubbish dumped in existing ditches. Quantity of old bricks, some part fired, plus presence of various pits in the area suggests some former brick-working in the area. {3}
