Full Description
Several features of unknown date were recorded during a watching brief in September 2005, undertaken to monitor groundworks at the Rock House Service Station, Scotgate, Stamford. The watching brief identified undated dumped deposits, a floor surface, an east to west aligned limestone wall and two limestone built cisterns. One of the cisterns had a stone built channel, almost certainly used for water management. The features indicate that a building formerly stood at the site. Assuming these features are contemporary, they may be 19th century in date as no building is depicted in this position on James Knipe's plan of Stamford dating to 1833, though the the possibility exists they may have been demolished prior to this date. {1}{2}
