Full Description
The remains of probable medieval wall foundations were revealed in May 2013, during trial trenching on land at 1-3 Friars Lane. The remains were identified as two linear cut features that contained obliquely laid fragments of stone rubble, thought to have formed the base layers of wall foundations. The alignment of these features is believed to match that of other medieval buildings, known to have been previously recorded in this area. The remains were sealed by layers of made-ground and probable midden material, from which an assemblage of medieval and early post-medieval ceramics was recovered. This assemblage was comprised of a small number of medieval roof tile fragments and sherds from a wide range of different medieval and post-medieval pottery fabrics, although was largely dominated by pieces from medieval Lincoln Glazed ware vessels. The assemblage and midden layers would seem to support the theory that this part of Lincoln had been abandoned during the 15th century. This abandonment appears to have continued until the redevelopment of this area in the 19th century, and remains of late 19th century buildings and activity were noted on the site, cutting into the made-ground layers. {1}{2}
Further layers of medieval and early post-medieval made-ground and midden deposits were revealed in August 2013, during a second phase of trial trenching in this area. The trenching confirmed the presence of the layers at the bottom of the excavated area, at a depth of approximately 1.5m. Late 19th century development had caused significant truncation and disturbance of the layers in this part of the site, however, and no significant earlier finds were recovered. {3}{4}
A small assemblage of redeposited medieval artefacts was recovered in May 2014, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for new water pipe services at 1-3 Friars Lane. The assemblage comprised the handles from two Lincoln Glazed ware jugs, dating from the 13th to 15th centuries, and a shaped block of local limestone, that had likely been used as construction material for former medieval buildings in this area. {5}{6}
